A routine border crossing inspection in Arizona turned into a major law enforcement bust after officers discovered a large cache of weapons hidden inside a luxury vehicle headed toward Mexico.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said officers stopped a four-door Lexus on Sunday at the Nogales Port of Entry near the Arizona border. During a secondary inspection, agents located a concealed compartment beneath the seats packed with firearms, ammunition accessories, and military-style weapon parts.
Officials said the seized items included a rocket-propelled grenade launcher tube, several rifles, an AK-style handgun, 16 AK-pattern rifles, 24 rifle magazines, 16 rifle stocks, 20 pistol grips, and various additional firearm parts.
Officials said the seizure highlights the ongoing challenge of weapons smuggling at the southern border and the sophisticated methods traffickers use to move illegal cargo across international crossings.
CBP leaders praised frontline officers for using advanced screening tools and inspection experience to uncover the hidden arsenal before it could leave the United States.
Authorities said stopping illegal weapons shipments is a critical part of border security efforts and helps reduce the flow of firearms to violent criminal groups operating in Mexico.
Investigators have not publicly connected the weapons to a specific cartel or criminal network.
The female driver now faces federal charges related to attempting to smuggle goods out of the United States. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in prison.
Three minors who were traveling in the vehicle were released to a family member, according to officials.
CBP Acting Director of Field Operations Carlos Gonzalez said officers work every day to disrupt transnational criminal organizations and protect communities on both sides of the border.
Federal prosecutors added that cases like this show the importance of continued cooperation between border agents and law enforcement agencies targeting weapons trafficking.
The investigation remains ongoing.
